Non-Mendelian genetics is a term describing patterns of inheritance that vary from the traditional ones laid down by Gregor Mendel in his classic Mendelian formulae. Although non-Mendelian genetics will describe inheritance based on dominant and recessive alleles, non-Mendelian genetics lay open a broad range of complicated inheritance patterns that tell more about genetic diversity and the expression of traits.

Some of the very common examples of non-Mendelian genetics include incomplete dominance, where the heterozygote phenotype is intermediate between that of a dominant and recessive allele. The basic example of incomplete dominance in flowers occurs with red flowers crossed with white flowers to yield pink flowers.

Another concept discussed is codominance whereby one’s alleles of a heterozygous organism are fully expressed and give a phenotype reflecting both traits that are simultaneously revealed. Human blood types are an example whereby in the A and B alleles, it is expressed in an AB blood type.

Polygenic inheritance refers to the contribution of several genes toward the formation of a single phenotype leading to the production of different possible phenotypes. All these traits include genes, influence one’s phenotype, and are related to some as skin color, height, or intelligence.

Epigenetics is the recent offshoot of non-Mendelian genetics – changes in gene expression due to environmental factors without, of course, modifying the DNA sequence itself. That has very important implications regarding how lifestyle and exposures in the environment affect genetic expression and health.
