It is the study about how animals develop. This is a study of how an embryo develops from a simple cell until eventually, it forms into a fully formed organism. There are several developmental stages in animal embryonic development: fertilization all the way up to birth or hatching.

Some of the earliest features of animal embryonic development are a rapid succession of cell divisions whereby the fertilized egg changes into a multicellular structure, called cleavage. In animals, cleavage refers to division of the zygote with no increase in size, so the general cells are smaller but more in number and are termed blastomeres; by this early phase, a stage is created by which the blastula – hollow ball of cells- continues differentiation.

At this stage, the cells begin to differentiate and arrange themselves into three prominent germ layers of ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm. These germ layers, subsequently, give rise to all the tissues and organs of the animal. For example, the nervous system and the skin are formed from the ectoderm; the muscles, bones, and the circulatory system by the mesoderm; and the digestive and respiratory systems are produced by the endoderm.
