These are the blood vessels of the circulation system in the body, designed to pass blood to other parts of the body. This is through an extremely vast network of blood vessels, which exist in three varieties; arteries, veins, and capillaries. Each plays a particular role in ensuring that blood flows properly, and oxygen, nutrients, and wastes are exchanged between blood and tissues.

Arteries are thick-walled vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood from the heart to tissues all over the body. The largest of them is the aorta that splits into very small arteries reaching several organs and limbs. These walls have to be strong and elastic and able to withstand the high pressure that results from the pulsating action of the pump of the heart.

Veins are vessels that carry de-oxygenated blood to the heart. The walls of veins are thinner than those of arteries and, in the case of veins, also contain valves preventing backward flow of blood, which enhances forward movement towards the heart in one direction. The largest veins include superior and inferior vena cava that collect blood from the upper and lower parts of the body, respectively.

Capillaries are the thinnest and smallest of the blood vessels. The same makes them a huge network between the arterial and the venous system. Thin walls of capillaries have but only one layer of endothelial cells; this allows the exchange, through its walls, of oxygen, nutrients, carbon dioxide, and waste products between blood and surrounding tissues because capillaries reach up to close proximity to the cell.

Vascular profile is ‘conditio sine qua non’ for overall cardiovascular health. Diseases such as atherosclerosis, hypertension, and varicose veins may result in abnormal functioning of the blood vessels, further creating serious health complications. A well-balanced diet accompanied with steady exercise and avoidance of smoking will give sound health to your blood vessels.
