Lymph is a transparent fluid, of course colorless, which flows through all the channels of the lymph system, elements that play a very important role in the balance of fluids and the removal of waste products, and most importantly, aid the immune system. Lymph originates from interstitial fluid-the fluid surrounding each of the cells of the human body-and contains a small amount of white blood cells, mainly lymphocytes important for immune defense.

In this system, the lymph flows through the lymphatic vessels to the lymph nodes. The lymph nodes then filter this lymph and trap and destroy pathogens-the most common of which are bacteria and viruses-so infection doesn’t spread to the body. This filtrated lymph returns back into the body through the thoracic duct and the right lymphatic ducts into the blood, essentially important so that there is fluid in the right amount in the body. It permits transporting immune cells to those places where they may be needed.

It is good to ensure that one has a great healthy lymphatic system for better health and better immunity. Hydration, exercises, and diets high in antioxidants also promote the flow of the lymph. Many of these practices helped alleviate problems like lymphedema resulting from obstruction of pathways for the lymphatic system. Knowledge about this role of lymph will therefore be pretty crucial as it underlines the importance of sustaining health and preventing disease.
