The PNS consists of nerves joining the CNS-the brain and the spinal cord-to the other parts of the body. It comprises sensory nerves, which carry information from sensory organs-received in the skin, seen by the eyes, or heard by the ears-to the CNS, and motor nerves that carry commands from the CNS to muscles and glands to enable movement and general body functions. These include control of the acts whether involuntary or voluntary, among them reflexes, sensation, and coordination. The PNS is further divided into two systems, including the somatic nervous system, where such voluntary movements as well as sensory input are controlled, and the autonomic nervous system, where involuntary functions are operated, such as heart rate and digestion. Good care of the peripheral nervous system is important for general working and reaction. Exercise, nutrient-rich diets perhaps high in sources of B vitamins and antioxidants, and avoiding toxic or nerve-damaging substances typically tend to promote nerve health. |
