The skin is considered the largest organ in the human body and primarily acts as a protective cover that provides covering to tissues and organs lying beneath it. It mainly consists of three main layers, namely epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous tissue. The epidermis is the most peripheral layer. The vast majority of cells that make it up are composed of keratinocytes, which produce keratin-a protein providing waterproofing and elasticity. It also consists of melanocytes responsible for pigmentation in the skin and Langerhans cells involved in immune defense. Under the epidermis is positioned the dermis: a thicker and more dense layer of connective tissue, full of blood vessels and nerves and hair follicles; these provide strength and elasticity to the skin. In this, collagen and elastin fibers are composed. Sweat glands and sebaceous glands maintain the skin’s moisture and regulate temperature. Well, of course, is the subcutaneous tissue itself. This innermost layer contains all this fat and connective tissue acting like insulators and absorbers. It is engaged in all thermoregulation, sensation, and protection against pathogens and environmental hazards, and it also assists in the synthesis of vitamin D when exposed to sunlight. Healthy skin is very important to general well-being, and it can be employed as a measure to assess the general health of the individual. |
