This is the urinary system, otherwise known as the renal system because it has the role of eliminating waste products and excess substances from the body through the production and excretion of urine. It plays a very important role in the body due to regulation of fluid balance, electrolytes, and the acid-base balance maintained in the body. Bean-shaped, the kidneys filter blood; they remove wastes, excess water, and other substances-for example-and in the process generate urine. They also control blood pressure, red blood cell counts, and calcium balance. Ureters: Fine tubes that carry urine from the kidneys down to the bladder. It is a muscular sac which holds urine until its expulsion. Urethra: A tube through which urine is excreted out of the body from the bladder. This means the urinary system plays a significant role in detoxifying the body and ensuring blood composition so cells and other organs can function appropriately. |
