The heart is a vital organ in the human body, responsible for pumping blood through the circulatory system to supply oxygen and nutrients to tissues and remove waste products like carbon dioxide. Located in the thoracic cavity between the lungs, the heart is a muscular organ about the size of a clenched fist and functions as the engine of the circulatory system.

The heart is divided into four chambers: the right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium, and left ventricle. These chambers work in a coordinated manner to ensure efficient blood flow. Blood low in oxygen returns from the body to the right atrium, passes into the right ventricle, and is then pumped to the lungs via the pulmonary artery for oxygenation. Oxygen-rich blood returns to the left atrium, flows into the left ventricle, and is pumped out to the rest of the body through the aorta.

The heart’s operation is regulated by an electrical conduction system that initiates and controls the heartbeat. The sinoatrial (SA) node, located in the right atrium, acts as the natural pacemaker, generating electrical impulses that cause the atria to contract and push blood into the ventricles. The atrioventricular (AV) node then relays these impulses to the ventricles, causing them to contract and pump blood to the lungs and the rest of the body.

The heart’s muscular walls, known as the myocardium, are specially adapted to endure continuous contraction and relaxation. The coronary arteries supply the myocardium with oxygenated blood, essential for its function.
