Actually, it is the hollow muscular part of the digestive system placed inside the upper region of the abdomen, usually which acts as the central organ in digestion. Besides that, it is supposed to cut food into a form that the body can absorb in order to gain energy and nutrition. The stomach is placed in a J-shaped way between the esophagus and small intestine.

Once food passes into the stomach, it’s mixed with gastric juice, which includes hydrochloric acid and digestive enzymes like pepsin so that proteins, as well as other food components, may break down into a semi-liquid substance called chyme. Very strong contractions of muscles in the stomach churn out the food further so it can be digested more easily and will be pushed toward the small intestine where further digestion will occur.

The stomach has a protective mucous lining that protects it against irritation caused by the acidic environment. It also plays a role in controlling hunger and fullness; therefore, proper functioning is required for absorption of nutrients. Most disorders of the stomach are ulcers, gastritis, acid reflux, and indigestion.
