But the defense system of a human body is so sophisticated against such dangerous microorganisms: viruses, bacteria or fungi aggressive toward their host. Such are elements of the immune system-the interaction of various cells of the immune system, between antibodies, and between signaling molecules, which mutually complement each other in detecting and eliminating the threat.

The moment the pathogens enter the body, two major pathways have been activated: the innate and adaptive immunity to protect against them. The innate response is very prompt but is more or less a nonspecific type of protection and forms the first line of response to infection. This includes physical barriers like the skin and mucous membranes as well as some immune cells, clearly visible and able to identify and attack the invaders, such as macrophages and neutrophils.

It has a higher specificity: that is, it is much more sensitive to a particular pathogen; it engages the use of lymphocytes that include T cells and B cells, which react to specific antigens existing on pathogens. The antibodies produced from the B cells neutralize and combine the antigens; T cells regulate and execute the immune response.

Immunological memory is a feature of the adaptive response; a contact with a pathogen permanently imprints immunological memory in a host and offers the possibility of a faster and stronger response when one encounters it again. Many vaccines take advantage of this, and that is why they are so effective in bringing lifetime immunity against certain infections.
