Neuroethology is a derivative of neuroscience because it deals with the neural basis of animal behavior as expressed in natural environments. Neuroethology is an integration of neuroscience and ethology because it aims at establishing how neural circuits and brain processes create and control behavior in relation to sensory inputs, neural processing, and motor outputs.

The research areas of neuroethology would thus be sensory processing, motor control, and behavioral adaptation. Essentially, it is the study by which animals perceive environmental stimulation through their sensory systems and how such perceptions lead to behavioral responses. To illustrate this, neuroethologists focus on how these visual, auditory, or even olfactory cues in the brain guide action-foraging, mating, navigation, among others.

Neuroethology is defined as the study of neural networks controlling complex movements or behaviors. In this regard, techniques employed include electrophysiology, optogenetics, and neuroimaging to record neuronal activity or networks of neurons associated with specific behaviors. An understanding of the neural mechanisms in this sense would imply an understanding of how animals modify their behavior in response to environmental conditions changes.

Other very important fields in neuroethology include behavioral adaptation-how one changes its behavior as a result of experience and environmental drift, understanding phenomena like learning, memory, and decision-making processes.
