There are four minute glands located behind the thyroid gland in the neck and play a central role in maintenance of calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood, substances important in bone formation, transmission of nerve impulses, and muscle contraction. The parathyroid glands produce parathyroid hormone (PTH) that increases the blood levels of calcium by stimulating the release of calcium from bones and increasing calcium absorption from intestine. Thus, normal functioning of the parathyroid gland is needed to live a disease-free life: hyperparathyroidism-that is, overproduction of PTH or hypoparathyroidism-normal production of PTH. Balanced diet with adequate calcium and vitamin D is basic support to parathyroid functions and bones. Even normal exercise and sun exposure help people maintain calcium metabolism. It would include kidney stones and osteoporosis among others for bone pains resultant from an imbalance of calcium. This means that all symptomatic features such as fatigue, muscle weakness, and mood swings must be reported to a doctor. |
