Tissues are aggregates of cells that perform almost all the functions of the body in mutual cooperation. Conventionally, there exist four major types of tissues classified according to their characters and functions as follows:

Epithelial Tissue – Covers bodies’ surfaces, lines the cavities and organs, and forms glands. Each has different types based on shapes of its cells- like squamous, cuboidal, and columnar, and number of layers, either simple or stratified. Its major functions include protection, absorption, secretion, and sensation.

Connective Tissue: This group consists of the connective tissue that provides support and binds and stores energy besides connecting to other tissues. The categories of connective tissues include loose connective tissue, dense connective tissue, adipose tissue or fat, cartilage, bone, and blood. It gives structural support and transports nutrients and performs some immunological functions.

Classified into three types: skeletal muscle, a voluntary, striated tissue for moving bones; cardiac muscle-an involuntary muscle that lives in the heart; and smooth muscle-also an involuntary muscle, located in the hollow organs. It has contracture-producing specialized cells. Nervous tissue This tissue conducts impulses and interprets information. It comprises neurons-the functional units of nerve cells responsible for conducting signals-and glial cells supporting, protecting, and nourishing the neurons. Coordination of body functions and response to stimuli are also functions of nervous tissue.

These four types of tissues together form an organ or system, and in this manner, they determine the all-round working of the body.
