The general term used to describe all disorders affecting the nervous system especially the brain, spinal cord, and nerves is referred to as neurological disorders. They affect how people remember, think, move about, feel sensations, and enjoy life.

Other important neurological disorders include Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, MS (multiple sclerosis), epilepsy, and stroke. Alzheimer’s is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that presents with memory loss, cognitive decline, and changes in behavior. Parkinson’s disease relates to a progressive neurodegenerative state where the loss of control over motor functions results in sometimes convulsive tremors, stiffness, and bradykinesia (slow movement). MS is an autoimmune neurodegenerative disease that affects the protective covering of nerves resulting in symptoms such as vision disturbances, muscle weakness, and coordination problems.

Epilepsy, an excess of the abnormal electrical activity resulting in recurrent seizures, is different from a stroke, which is the end result of an interrupted blood flow to the brain that provokes sudden neurological deficits; hence, both conditions present different difficulties in diagnosis, management, and treatment.

Some of the important developments are better neuroimaging techniques, like MRI and PET scans; molecular diagnostics, amongst others; research into biomarkers and genetic factors, for which discoveries will be very important in either understanding the basic pathogenetic cause or elucidating ways to target the therapies.

Treatment could be multimodal: drugs, physical therapy and lifestyle modifications. New drug treatments that now come out in development include gene therapy and neuroprotective agents designed to provide enhanced clinical improvement and quality of life.
