Biogeographic regions, also known as biogeographic realms, are large areas of the Earth’s surface defined by distinct patterns of plant and animal life. These regions are characterized by unique combinations of species that have evolved within their boundaries over millions of years. There are six primary biogeographic regions recognized globally, each shaped by its geological history, climate, and ecological factors.

  1. Nearctic Region: Encompassing North America, this region includes the United States, Canada, and parts of Mexico. It is known for its diverse fauna, including mammals like bison and bears, and unique bird species.
  2. Palearctic Region: Covering Europe, Asia north of the Himalayas, and northern Africa, the Palearctic realm is home to diverse habitats from tundra to deserts. It supports iconic species such as wolves, deer, and migratory birds.
  3. Neotropical Region: Spanning Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean islands, this region hosts the Amazon Rainforest, the world’s largest tropical rainforest, teeming with biodiversity like jaguars, macaws, and countless plant species.
  4. Afrotropical Region: Found primarily in sub-Saharan Africa, this realm includes savannas, deserts, and tropical forests. It supports iconic megafauna such as elephants, lions, and giraffes, alongside diverse bird and insect species.
  5. Indomalayan Region: Extending across South and Southeast Asia, this realm features diverse ecosystems from tropical rainforests to Himalayan mountains. It is known for tigers, orangutans, and unique bird species like the peacock.
  6. Australasian Region: Encompassing Australia, New Zealand, and neighboring islands, this region is characterized by its unique marsupial fauna, including kangaroos and koalas, as well as diverse bird species like the emu and kiwi.

Biogeographic regions provide a framework for understanding the distribution of species and ecosystems across the planet, highlighting the interconnectedness of geography, climate, and evolutionary history in shaping biodiversity. These realms are critical for conservation efforts, as they help prioritize areas for protection and management to safeguard Earth’s natural heritage.
