Cell biology is the branch of biology that studies the structure, function, and behavior of cells, which are the basic units of life. This field encompasses a wide range of topics, from the detailed molecular mechanisms within a cell to the interactions of cells within a larger organism.

Cells are broadly categorized into two types: prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells. Prokaryotic cells, which include bacteria and archaea, are simpler and smaller. They lack membrane-bound organelles and a defined nucleus. Their genetic material is contained in a nucleoid region, and they often have a cell wall for added protection and structure.

In contrast, eukaryotic cells, found in plants, animals, fungi, and protists, are more complex and larger. They contain a defined nucleus enclosed by a nuclear membrane, where the cell’s genetic material is stored. Eukaryotic cells also possess a variety of membrane-bound organelles, such as mitochondria for energy production, the endoplasmic reticulum for protein and lipid synthesis, and Golgi apparatus for modifying and packaging proteins.

A key feature of both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells is the cell membrane, also known as the plasma membrane. This critical structure is composed of a phospholipid bilayer embedded with proteins, which controls the movement of substances into and out of the cell, thereby maintaining homeostasis. The plasma membrane also plays a vital role in cell signaling and communication, allowing cells to interact with their environment and with each other.
