The immune system is that group of cells, tissues, and organs in the body which serves the unifying function of protecting it from infections and diseases; it consists of two principal branches: innate immunity and adaptive immunity.

The innate immunity is the first line of defense that gives nonspecific protection against infections from the onset.

The physical: This refers to the skin and mucous membranes that practically prevent infectious agents from penetrating into the body; cellular barriers are macrophages, neutrophils, and natural killer cells that might eliminate infectious agents through phagocytosis; chemical mediators such as antimicrobial peptides, and complement system that promote the removal of the infectious agents and by causing inflammation in a bid to trap and eliminate infectious agents. Therefore, it becomes a more specific and long-lasting defense mechanism with targeted response to pathogens by the adaptive immunity. The weapon comprises lymphocytes who have two subtypes of cells. These include B cells and T cells. Antibodies from B cells serve to neutralize the pathogen which causes its own death. There are also two classes of T cells, one coordinating the response-helper T cells-, and the other that kills cells once a pathogen has entered-cytotoxic T cells-. The central feature of adaptive immunity is the generation of immunological memory, which would subsequently mean more rapid and more effective responses on further exposure to the same pathogen. It is this principle that lays the foundation for how a vaccine operates.

Secondary lymphoid organs comprise spleen, nodes of lymph, and tonsils that contain the aggregating immune cells in the first stage of response in the immune system. Primary lymphoid organs occur in the bone marrow and thymus where immune cells receive maturation and production.
