It is a little above 20 feet in length and constitutes one of the parts of the digestive system. It contains three sections of these: the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. It is this narrow tube that coils relating to the stomach and the large intestine, permitting nutrient absorption and digestion.

It starts at the duodenum, where the foodstuffs coming from the stomach are mixed with the bile released by the liver and digestive juices from the pancreas. At this mixed state, it breaks down food into smaller molecules. Here, the chyme passing to the jejunum absorbs all nutrients, including carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals, into the bloodstream through the intestinal walls lining with small, finger-like projections known as villi.

The ileum is the last part of the small intestine. This is where nutrition is further absorbed, with most of the bile salts and vitamin B12 being absorbed in this area. Residual solid food particles and waste material are passed to the large intestine.

The small intestine is a part of the digestion system which digests food, apart from that function, it plays an important role for the immune function by encompassing gut microbiota and producing different kinds of hormones regulating digestion and appetite. Therefore, proper functioning of the small intestine is necessary for the right kind of nutritional balance and well-being.
