DNA replication, or deoxyribonucleic acid replication, is a vital process that ensures the accurate reproduction of genetic material during cell division. This process is essential for growth, development, and maintenance of all living organisms. Understanding the steps involved in DNA replication provides insights into how cells preserve genetic continuity.

The DNA replication process begins with the unwinding of the double helix, facilitated by the enzyme helicase. This creates two single strands that serve as templates for the formation of new DNA. The next step involves the enzyme primase, which synthesizes short RNA primers complementary to the DNA templates. These primers provide a starting point for DNA polymerase, the enzyme responsible for adding nucleotides to form the new DNA strands.

During DNA formation, DNA polymerase attaches to the primer and begins to synthesize the new strand by adding nucleotides complementary to the template strand. This occurs in the 5′ to 3′ direction. On the leading strand, DNA replication is continuous, while on the lagging strand, replication is discontinuous, forming short segments known as Okazaki fragments. These fragments are later joined together by the enzyme ligase.

The final step in DNA reproduction involves proofreading and error correction. DNA polymerase has the ability to identify and correct mismatched nucleotides, ensuring the accuracy of the replication process.
