Transcription is the process in which genetic information encoded in DNA becomes copied into mRNA. This can be viewed as a prime step of gene expression, because cells can now synthesize all proteins that are involved in a wide range of functions.

It begins with the attachment of RNA polymerase to a specific region of DNA called the promoter. This unwinds and separates DNA. RNA polymerase travels down one of the DNA template strands. There it forms one of the strands of RNA by adding complementary RNA nucleotides to the chain. For example, wherever there is an adenine (A) in the DNA template, RNA polymerase adds uracil (U) to the mRNA.

When the RNA strand is synthesized, a few other things happen in the process: adding a 5′ cap, a poly-A tail, and splicing to remove the introns or non-coding regions. Mature mRNA leaves the nucleus and enters the cytoplasm where it will be translated into a protein. Transcription controls gene expression and what the cell does.
