Biomolecules are the raw materials of life, the structures and functions required for survival and flourishing of living organisms. Organic molecules per se represent a very broad range of compounds, each finding a particular crucial role in biological processes. The different categories of biomolecules form the basis of much of the study in biology and biochemistry.

There are four major classes of biomolecules: carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. Carbohydrates include both fuel for the cell and structural elements of cells. Proteins are highly diverse molecules. They can assume catalytic functions, structural functions, signaling functions, or something in between. Lipids are a source for long-term energy storage, for the formation of cellular membranes, and as mediators of signal transduction. Nucleic acids-the DNA and RNA-containing molecules-store and convey genetic information.

Biomolecules are everywhere. Glucose is a simple carbohydrate that serves for energy in life. Hemoglobin is a protein found in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body. The cell membrane bilayer consists of phospholipids and DNA contains the blue-print of the genetic instructions for life.

A recent development that has generated substantial interest in biomolecule research has taken the form of biomolecular condensates. Biomolecular condensates are phase-separated, membrane-less organelles composed by biomolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids. Because these condensates play a central role in both cell organizational processes and regulation of many biochemical reactions throughout their life cycle, they thus take part in RNA processing, signal transduction, stress responses, and other dynamic ways of cell organization and function.
